Nominations being sought for the first Eugene Cernan Safety Award

Bombardier announced today that it will reveal the recipient of its first annual Eugene Cernan Safety Award at this year’s Safety Standdown U.S.A. Registration for the 16th edition of the annual event, featuring workshops and general sessions on current aviation safety topics, is now open. Safety Standdown 2012 will be held from October 8 to 11, 2012 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Wichita, Kansas. A complete schedule of events and registration information is available at Safetystanddown.com.

The first Eugene Cernan Safety Award will be presented during the dinner banquet on October 10 to an aviation professional who has attended at least one Safety Standdown seminar and who champions its principles. Nominations are now being sought for this award.

“The nominee should be an individual who has made a difference to aviation safety by setting the highest professional standards, leading by example and mentoring others in their pursuit of excellence and professionalism,” said Rick Rowe, Manager, Safety Standdown Programs. “They should demonstrate traits similar to those that contributed to the successful career of Naval Aviator, NASA Astronaut and Safety Standdown ambassador, Captain Gene Cernan.”

The Safety Standdown Advisory Council will select a winner according to the following criteria:

  1. Has gone above and beyond professional expectations;
  2. Embodies the framing principles of Safety Standdown;
  3. Has demonstrated an exceptional dedication, commitment, and contribution to aviation safety through their actions and behaviour.
  4. Demonstrates professionalism, dedication, commitment, courage, passion and leadership in the execution of their professional duties.

Nominations for the Eugene Cernan Safety award are being accepted at safetystanddown.com and by e-mail to info@safetystanddown.com.

Bombardier pioneering safety worldwide
Originally conceived in 1996 as a safety-training event for the Learjet flight demonstration team, the conference quickly garnered a reputation for excellence beyond Bombardier's customer base. In 1999, Bombardier opened the seminar to all pilots - corporate, commercial or military - in response to growing interest. Bombardier has elected to offer this training free-of-charge to all participants, in order to further endorse the program.

Safety Standdown has been endorsed by top aeronautical training institutions for the quality and depth of its content. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and NBAA Certified Aviation Manager (CAM) offer continuing education credits to all attendees. As of June 2012, more than 5,600 pilots, crew members, safety specialists and industry officials have graduated from Safety Standdown.

On-line registration and additional details are available at www.safetystanddown.com.
